Solution

Optical Services

Do you need reliable optical measurements of luminescent materials? Do you have (nano)phosphor materials, quantum dots, perovskites, or other luminescent samples which need to be optically characterized? Then Seaborough has the solution with a measurement setup that is validated according to industrial values.

More details

Our spectrofluorometer setup is designed for spectral measurements on both liquid and solid luminescent samples. Our custom built optical setup can deliver more advanced characterization such as absolute quantum yield (QY), excitation intensity dependent QY (photo- thermal- saturation or “droop” measurements) and temperature dependent optical measurements on solid sample form factors.

You can contact us for photo- thermal-saturation, absolute quantum yield, thermal quenching and spectral measurements. We provide reliable results, clear reports, we work quickly and the team consists of well-trained engineers and (PhD) scientists with both chemistry and physics background.

Measurements

1. Emission Spectra

Emission spectra can be recorded on all sample form factors, in a wavelength range of 230-870 nm.

2. Excitation spectra

Excitation spectra can be recorded on all sample form factors, in a wavelength range of 230-870 nm.

3. Diffuse Reflectance Spectra

Diffuse reflectance spectra can be recorded on all sample form factors, in a wavelength range of 230-870 nm.

4. Absolute Quantum Yield

Absolute quantum yield measurements can be measured for excitation at either 395, 445 or 486 nm, for an emission wavelength range of 350-1000 nm. Absolute measurements can only be performed for powder (Lambertian scattering) samples.

5. Photo- Thermal-Saturation

Photo- thermal-saturation (“droop”) measurements can be measured at incident intensities up to 10 W/mm2, for excitation at either 395, 445 or 486 nm and an emission wavelength range of 350-1000 nm. Absolute measurements can only be performed for powder (Lambertian scattering) samples, relative measurements on all solid sample form factors.

6. Thermal Quenching

Thermal quenching measurements can be measured for temperatures up to 120°C, for excitation at either 395, 445 or 486 nm, for an emission wavelength range of 350-1000 nm. Absolute measurements can only be performed for powder (Lambertian scattering) samples, relative measurements on all solid sample form factors.

Advanced optical characterization
setup in depth

Our unique optical setup keeps track of every photon in our system by measuring incident, emitted, and scattered light (assuming Lambertian scattering). This allows us to accurately determine absolute QY of luminescent powders, and relative QY for samples with different scattering behavior (e.g., ceramics, sheets, or silicon disks).

Additionally, intensity-dependent emission or QY data can be obtained due to the precise control of the incident intensity, which is accurately determined by measuring the intensity profile of the beam on the sample. To control the temperature of the sample, our diode lasers (with λ = 395, 445, or 486 nm) can be operated in both continuous wave or pulsed mode. In addition, the sample is mounted to an heat sink which can be actively cooled or heated. For specific excitation and emission profiles, we have the additional ability to measure the temperature within the laser spot on the sample using IR-excited thermometric materials.

Background

It takes time, money and expertise to develop reliable optical characterization services. Especially absolute QY measurements require extremely careful calibration and a well thought-through system. For these reasons, such measurements are often reserved for large industrial parties or dedicated research groups at academia, while reliable feedback of the optical properties is of crucial importance for luminescent material development.

Therefore, Seaborough provides a unique and accessible optical characterization service to third parties, such as companies in the lighting industry, research and scientific institutions. The instrument has been industry-validated and guarantees reliable measurements and data. Data and reports are delivered quickly and in understandable language.
